Chapter Eighteen

Wednesday

KIERAN WENT to the window and, like a fool, watched Jaxon walking away. When he was out of sight, Kieran pressed his head against the door, trying to calm the explosion of emotions racing around his brain and body.

Jaxon had to leave tonight. It couldn’t have ended any differently or any better if he’d stayed, and it would probably have been a whole lot worse for everyone involved. There couldn’t be a more inappropriate person to be falling in love with. Jaxon was supposed to be getting married in three days, while Kieran was only here to do a job, not to fall in love with the subject of his column.

Life in Buckwheat Springs went on before Kieran got here, and it would go on long after he’d written his column and left. He was supposed to pass through as an observer. Kieran had no right to come here and change anything. He was like a time traveler, warned not to do anything that might alter the future forever.

He’d already made everything harder for Jaxon all around. Would anyone guess the bond that had formed between them? Jaxon’s life would be ruined if anyone suspected he was gay. Buckwheat Springs didn’t have the rainbow flag flying at all, unless you counted the margaritas at La Piñata.

Poor Jaxon.

He didn’t belong with Danetta, that was for damn sure. But now it had nothing to do with Danetta. Jaxon wouldn’t be happy with her, and that would eventually make her miserable. Better to cancel a wedding than deal with an unhappy marriage and divorce. Or no divorce. Danetta’s parents hadn’t taken the escape route when plainly they should have.

But Jaxon would never tell her, because he was clearly so concerned about not hurting her. How ironic, considering Danetta had hurt so many men before Jaxon—men who still cared for and protected her.

The best thing he could do for Jaxon was to find out Danetta’s secret before the wedding. If Jaxon knew what it was, he’d reconsider his decision to marry her. When Kieran had first arrived, he was focused on whether Danetta would go through with the wedding. Now he was convinced she would—and it was the worst possible outcome he could imagine for everyone involved.

If only Kieran could get out of going to the wedding. Impossible. But he would be an emotional basket case watching Jaxon make the biggest mistake of his life. Jaxon’s sense of duty and obligation would take him down the wrong path, and it would be a very long road.

Kieran poured a large shot of tequila into his glass and downed it, the throat-searing pain distracting him from Jaxon’s visit, from the way he’d felt in Kieran’s arms, and how he’d responded to Kieran’s touch. More tequila seemed to be the only thing that could keep Kieran’s thoughts from wandering to what Jaxon was doing and thinking right now.

Better to sit here in a tequila-flavored cloud of loneliness.
